Message From the President…

Summer is just around the corner and I can hardly contain all of my excitement for the hot, humid days to come! I’m not only excited for summer, though, I’m also excited to be your next Chamber President. I appreciate that you have given me this opportunity and hope that I can successfully meet your expectations.

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to Karen Ahrenstorff for not only her past year of serving as Chamber President, but also her many years of serving as a Chamber Board of Director. Karen demonstrated great leadership and commitment to the Chamber during her time.

A big welcome goes out to our new board member, Judy Meyer from ResCom Realty. We look forward to Judy’s leadership. Judy will also continue to be part of the Promotions Committee.

During the next couple of board meetings, the directors are planning to establish some goals for 2008-2009. We really appreciate all the feedback and comments we received from all of our members during our phone survey. Your input will help us establish our annual goals. If you have any other comments or concerns, please feel free inform any board member.

Please remember to attend the wonderful activities planned for our annual town festival, Duck Days, on Thursday, June 19 to Saturday, June 21. A schedule of events is included in this newsletter. The committee has been working hard to schedule some new activities as well as bring back some previous activities. Thanks to all the committee members, especially Sue Harazin and Jennifer Wiens, for all their hard work with the festival. Also, thanks to Steve and Dina Wegman for all their time and efforts with the Battle of the Bands parade that will take place on Friday, June 20 at 6:30 pm. We appreciate all of you and your volunteers tremendously!

Thank you for your Chamber membership!

Susan Gengler

Parkview Clinic supplies ABCD Guide to Skin Cancer

To detect melanomas or other skin cancers, use the A-B-C-D skin self-examination guide, adapted from the American Academy of Dermatology:

· A is for ASYMMETRICAL shape. Look for moles with irregular shapes, such as two very different-looking halves.

· B is for irregular BORDER. Look for moles with irregular, notched or scalloped borders — the characteristics of melanomas.

· C is for changes in COLOR. Look for growths that have many colors or an uneven distribution of color.

· D is for DIAMETER. Look for growths that are larger than about 1/4 inch (6 millimeters).

PREVENTION: Most skin cancers can be prevented by limiting or avoiding exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and by paying attention to suspicious changes in your skin. If caught early enough, most skin cancers can be successfully treated. Educate yourself and your family about how to examine and protect your skin.

Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Because the sun’s rays are strongest during this period, try to schedule outdoor activities for other times of the day, even in winter or when the sky is cloudy.

Wear sunscreen year-round. Sunscreens play a major role in an overall sun-protection program. For the most protection, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 when you go outside, year-round. Apply sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply it every two hours throughout the day, as well as after swimming or exercising. Replace your sunscreen annually and don’t store it where it will be exposed to sun or high temperatures.

Wear protective clothing. Sunscreens don’t provide complete protection from UV rays. That’s why it's a good idea to also wear dark, tightly-woven clothing that covers your arms and legs, and a broad-brimmed hat, which provides more protection than a baseball cap or visor does. Photoprotective clothing is available at many local retailers. Look for information about UV protection on the tag. Don’t forget sunglasses, to be effective, they should block both UVA and UVB rays.

Avoid tanning beds. Tanning beds emit UVA rays, which may be as dangerous as UVB rays — especially since UVA light penetrates deeper into your skin and causes pre-cancerous skin lesions.

Be aware of sun-sensitizing medications. Some common prescription and over-the-counter drugs — including antibiotics; certain cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes medications; birth control pills; nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others); and the acne medicine isotretinoin (Accutane) — can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about the side effects of any medications you take. If they increase your sensitivity to sunlight, be sure to take extra precautions.

EARLY DETECTION:

Check your skin once a month and report changes to your doctor. Examine your skin often. Look for new skin growths or changes in existing moles, freckles, bumps and birthmarks. With the help of a partner or a mirror, check your face, neck, ears and scalp. Examine your chest and trunk, and the tops and undersides of your arms and hands. Examine both the front and back of your legs, your feet and hands, nails, including the soles and the spaces between your toes. Also check your genital area, including between your buttocks.

Have regular skin exams. Consult your doctor for a complete skin exam every year if you’re older than 40, or more often if you’re at high risk of developing skin cancer.

Jackson Chiropractic of Lake Crystal Presents Happy Feet!

Jackson Chiropractic, P.A. of Lake Crystal is excited to announce the addition of a new state of the art digital balance and foot scanner!

With this new technology we are now able to provide our patients and the community with the latest in high tech computerized balance assessment. Dr. Matt Wasmund, as well as the entire Jackson Chiropractic staff, have been trained to use this new technology and are ready to serve you.

“This two minute scanning system is a powerful diagnostic and teaching tool that produces a multicolor picture of where pressure is being applied in the feet. Pressure should be equal on each side, but can be very different when comparing the left and right foot in some patients. Once you see your foot scan, you are more likely to understand how spinal joint, knee and foot problems occur due to dropped arches and other pressure imbalances in the feet.” –Dr. Wasmund

This tool will help the Doctors to determine if a person is having balance issues effecting the spine and lower extremity joints as well as to assess the need for custom-made arch supports. This, in turn, will help with detection, treatment and prevention of a variety of common conditions such as foot/ankle pain, plantar fascitis, knee pain, foot spurs, hip/low back pain, headaches and more.

“The scan will also include the new enhanced Report of Findings computerized print out to help you better understand the results of your scan. It also allows custom arch support orders to be sent instantly to Foot Levelers’ laboratory over the Internet, cutting order turnaround time in half.”-Dr. Wasmund

We invite anyone to stop in or call for an appointment to try out our new foot scanner at NO CHARGE during THE MONTH of JUNE!

Office hours are Tuesdays 9:30 am-5:00 pm and Thursdays 9:30 am-7:00 pm.

Appointments can be made M-F by calling (507) 726-2530.

News From Small Wonders Daycare

Small Wonders Daycare visited the Residents at the Lake Crystal Health Care Center on Tuesday, May 13 to celebrate "National Nursing Home Week". They made Rice Krispie Bars to share for a snack and took crayons, markers and coloring pictures, so that they could make pictures with the residents that were able to participate and passed them out to the ones that are confined to their rooms. They also gathered together by the fireplace and sang several songs for entertainment. A great time was had by all!

Boni Thompson has been elected President of the Caring and Sharing Childcare Association for the 2008-2009 year. They meet every 2nd Monday of the month Sept. - May at the Blue Earth County Government Center. The purpose of the Association is to promote the professionalism of the licensed in-home child care provider within the community, to promote Quality Child care through education, to provide exchange of ideas among all persons in quality licensed child care, and to help meet the needs of the licensed child care providers in the surrounding areas through education and training workshops so they can better meet the needs of the children and expectations of both parents and governmental agencies. Boni stated that she is looking forward to the challenge!

1st Annual Art and Photo Contest Promotes

Water Quality and Local Scenic Beauty

Lake Crystal, MN – A bold, golden sun is mirrored on Crystal Lake as it rises behind the trees and backlights the tombstones of Lake Crystal Cemetery… three anglers in overalls and ball caps sit in folding lawn chairs and companionable silence casting their lines from the shore of Loon Lake in the afternoon sun… a pair of mallards dabble in the shallows and cattails on Mills Lake during the spring nesting season.

Perhaps these are some of the images that come to mind when you think of the Crystal Loon Mills Watershed, or perhaps you have your own favorite mental pictures of the lakes. The 1st Annual Crystal Loon Mills Viewers Choice Photography and Art Contest will give people the opportunity to turn their mental pictures of the watershed into actual pictures and win prizes!

Entries will be on display at the Minnesota State University Centennial Student Union Art Gallery from July 14th- 19th and the public will be able to vote for their favorites during the 14th-17th. The awards reception will be July 18th at 6pm at the CSU Gallery. In addition to great prizes, winners will have their work on display in City Hall and be featured in various Clean Water Partnership publications.

The Crystal Loon Mills Clean Water Partnership is a locally managed project that addresses water quality issues in Crystal, Loon, and Mills Lakes. Priority issues include reducing phosphorus, increasing water transparency, decreasing harmful algal bloom intensity and frequency and educating citizens on lake-related environmental concerns.

The Viewer’s Choice Photo and Art Contest is being sponsored by the Clean Water Partnership, City of Lake Crystal, MinnStar Bank, Dina’s on Main, Weggy’s Bar & Grill, Weggy’s Liquor Locker, Going BONKERS Gift Shop, Le May’s Humphrey Street Bar & Grill, and Kevin’s Market.

If you have questions about the Photography and Art Contest or your business would like to be a sponsor, please contact Sarah Duda at 507-389-2299 or sarah.duda@mnsu.edu.
